Hotel Wailea Relais and Chateaux Maui: A Romantic Adults-Only Escape

If you're looking for a quiet, upscale getaway in Maui without the crowds or noise of family resorts, Hotel Wailea is in a league of its own. It’s the only adults-only hotel on the island and part of the Relais & Châteaux collection, which tells you right away that it’s focused on privacy, excellent service, and attention to detail.

We stayed here for a week and got engaged during our trip, but even if that hadn’t happened, we’d still be raving about the hotel.

The Property

Hotel Wailea sits above the main resort strip in Wailea, which means you get panoramic views of the ocean and a more peaceful atmosphere. The property feels intimate with just 72 one-bedroom suites spread across 15 acres of gardens, waterfalls, and walking paths. There’s no tower or high-rise; it feels more like a private residential enclave than a hotel.

Each suite has a separate living area, large lanai, and spa-like bathroom. We spent a lot of time just sitting outside, watching the sunset or listening to the birds in the morning. It’s very quiet with no poolside DJ, no screaming kids, no big conference groups.

Dining

The food is excellent. The Restaurant at Hotel Wailea serves seasonal, locally sourced dishes with a strong emphasis on fresh seafood and produce from their own garden. The open-air setting makes every meal feel special without being overly formal.

If you're looking for something even more private, there's the Treehouse with a secluded dining experience where a private chef cooks a multi-course dinner just for you. We did this the night we got engaged, and while it’s definitely a splurge, it’s something we’ll never forget.

Amenities

While it’s not beachfront, the hotel has a partnership with a beach club down the hill and offers complimentary rides, chairs, and umbrellas. The infinity pool is a peaceful spot to spend the afternoon, with great cocktails and snacks from the pool bar. There’s also a small fitness studio, spa services, and unique offerings like aerial yoga with an ocean view.

The Vibe

Hotel Wailea isn’t flashy. It’s not about scene or status, it’s about space, calm, and thoughtful design. The staff is friendly and low-key. Service is excellent but never overbearing. You feel like you’re staying at a very well-run private estate.

Bottom Line

Hotel Wailea is ideal for couples who want a quiet, high-end experience on Maui. It’s not cheap, but it delivers real value in terms of space, privacy, and quality. Whether you're celebrating something special or just need a break from the grind, it’s one of the most relaxing and romantic places we’ve ever stayed.
